11.11.18

EJI Director Bryan Stevenson will receive the inaugural People’s Champion Award at the E! People Choice Awards on Sunday, November 11 at 9 p.m. EST. The award recognizes Mr. Stevenson’s work to protect the poor, the incarcerated, and the condemned and is part of the Erase the Hate campaign. This campaign celebrates individuals who are taking action against discrimination and bias across the country.

The award will be presented by award-winning singer-songwriter John Legend, who will perform a tribute to Mr. Stevenson.

“It is an incredible honor to present this award to Bryan Stevenson, a man whose life’s work has been dedicated to fighting social injustices and advocating for civil rights,” John Legend said in a statement from NBCUniversal.  “He embodies what it means to be a people’s champion with his fierce commitment to helping the poor, the incarcerated and the condemned.”

John Legend performed at the grand opening of EJI’s Legacy Museum and the National Memorial for Peace and Justice in April.

EJI is thankful for the recognition by the E! People’s Choice Awards, and will continue to seek an end to mass incarceration and excessive punishment, to protect human rights, and to confront our history of racial equality.
