In April 2018, EJI was thrilled to open the National Memorial for Peace and Justice and the Legacy Museum: From Enslavement to Mass Incarceration. Both sites opened to great acclaim and tens of thousands of people came to Montgomery.
The opening was accompanied by a two-day summit which featured talks, music, conversations and discussion from national leaders. A sampling of the summit reveals the broad range of leaders and performers who participated in two days of programming. EJI is pleased to begin presenting these thought provoking and moving conversations and sessions beginning with a stirring speech delivered by Rev. William Barber on the first day of the summit.
Rev. William Barber is the co-chair of the National Poor People’s Campaign: A National Call for Moral Revival. After years of activism in North Carolina, he is leading a national movement to address many of the issues that motivated Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. to organize the first Poor People’s Campaign in 1968.
New Yorker writer Jelani Cobb, who was in attendance at this session, heralded Dr. Barber’s speech as one of his finest he has heard. We are thrilled to share it with you.
