EJI Staff

Bryan Stevenson

Executive Director

Bryan Stevenson is a widely acclaimed public interest lawyer who has dedicated his career to helping the poor, the incarcerated, and the condemned. Under his leadership, EJI has won major legal challenges eliminating excessive and unfair sentencing, exonerating innocent death row prisoners, confronting abuse of the incarcerated and the mentally ill, and aiding children prosecuted as adults. He led the creation of EJI’s highly acclaimed cultural sites, the Legacy Museum and the National Memorial for Peace and Justice, which opened in 2018. Mr. Stevenson’s work has won him numerous awards, including over 40 honorary doctorates, the MacArthur Foundation “Genius” Prize, and the ABA Medal, the American Bar Association’s highest honor. He is a graduate of the Harvard Law School and the Harvard School of Government and the author of the award-winning New York Times bestseller, Just Mercy, which was recently adapted as a major motion picture.

Eva Ansley

Operations Director

Eva Ansley has coordinated and developed legal services for poor people and death row prisoners in Alabama for over 30 years. She has been instrumental in developing institutional assistance to indigent defendants at the Alabama Capital Representation Resource Center and the Equal Justice Initiative since the inception of both organizations.

Randy Susskind

Deputy Director

Randy Susskind has been with EJI since graduating from Georgetown University Law Center in 1994. He also serves as adjunct faculty in the Equal Justice and Capital Defender Clinic at the New York University School of Law. He previously worked as a staff attorney at the Alabama Capital Representation Resource Center.

Tera DuVernay

Deputy Director of Museum and Memorial Operations

Tera DuVernay has an extensive background in management, research, recruiting, and customer service. Most recently, she served as Chief Researcher for the Academy Award and Emmy nominated documentary chronicling America’s mass criminalization epidemic, 13th. She contributed research to the ESPN documentary on gender equality in sports entitled Venus Vs. and the Henry Louis Gates PBS docuseries, Finding Your Roots. She previously held management positions in the airline and health insurance industries.

Jacqueline Jones-Peace

Senior Attorney, Director of Development

Jacqueline Jones-Peace was on the faculty at New York University School of Law as Co-Associate Director of the Lawyering Program. Prior to that, she was a Litigation Associate at Cleary Gottlieb in New York for several years after clerking for U.S. District Judge John S. Martin in the Southern District of New York. She is a 1995 graduate of New York University School of Law.

Tatiana Bertsch

Senior Attorney

Tatiana Bertsch is a 2005 graduate of New York University School of Law. She has a B.A. in geology from Smith College and before law school was assistant director of the Gender Studies Program at Harvard University Graduate School of Education. Prior to joining EJI, she was a public defender in West Palm Beach, Florida, where she handled misdemeanor and felony trials for five years before specializing in the investigation and presentation of mitigating evidence in capital trials as a Mitigation Attorney in the Major Crimes division.

Alicia D’Addario

Senior Attorney

Alicia D’Addario is a 2005 graduate of New York University School of Law. Prior to joining EJI, she clerked for Judge Rosemary Pooler on the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. She received her B.A. from Oberlin College in 2002, where she majored in both Math and History.

John Dalton

Senior Attorney

John Dalton graduated in 2009 from Stanford Law School. Prior to joining EJI, he clerked for Judge Pamela Ann Rymer on the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit and was an associate at Davis, Polk & Wardwell. He has a B.A. in Political Science, History, and Religion from Carson-Newman College in Jefferson City, Tennessee.

Charlotte Morrison

Senior Attorney

Charlotte Morrison has been with EJI since 2001. She clerked for Judge Rosemary Barkett on the United States Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit, is a former Rhodes Scholar with degrees in Philosophy from Oxford University and the University of Montana, and graduated from New York University School of Law in 2000.

Sia Sanneh

Senior Attorney

Sia Sanneh received a J.D. from Yale Law School in 2007. She has a Master’s degree in teaching of social studies from Columbia University Teachers College and earned a B.A. in history from Columbia University in 2001. After graduating law school, she was a Liman Public Interest Fellow in New York, where she studied the collateral consequences of school-based arrests.

Angie Setzer

Senior Attorney

Angie Setzer interned with EJI in the fall of 1998 and joined the staff after graduating from the University of Michigan Law School in 1999. She currently manages some of EJI’s training programs and has challenged capital convictions and death sentences across Alabama.

Jennifer Taylor

Senior Attorney

Jennifer Taylor is a 2010 graduate of Yale Law School, where she participated in the Prison Legal Services Clinic and interned for the NAACP Legal Defense Fund. She has a B.A. in Comparative Studies in Race and Ethnicity from Stanford University and a Master’s in Journalism from Columbia University.

Aaryn Urell

Senior Attorney

Aaryn Urell has been with EJI since she graduated from New York University School of Law in 2001. She has a Master’s Degree in International Relations from American University and has worked on human rights and conflict resolution in Ghana and South Africa. She is a member of the Alabama bar.

Sonia Kapadia

Deputy Director of Strategic Initiatives

Sonia Kapadia received a B.A. in Communications from the University of Pennsylvania in 2002 and an MBA from the Harvard Business School in 2007. She has years of experience as a brand manager for PepsiCo in North America and the UK and was a senior leader at a number of successful startups including Gu Chocolate Desserts in London and Rent the Runway in New York City. She brought her extensive experience as Chief Marketing Officer and CEO to EJI in 2017.

Anthony Ray Hinton

Community Educator

Anthony Ray Hinton was falsely accused of committing two murders outside of Birmingham, Alabama, in 1985. He was wrongly convicted and spent nearly 30 years on Alabama’s death row before he was exonerated and freed in April 2015. A deeply compelling speaker, he has become a powerful advocate against the death penalty and speaks nationally about the urgent need for criminal justice reform.

Amy Hulsey

Chief Financial Officer

Amy Hulsey is a certified public accountant with over 12 years of public accounting experience in the financial field. A certified federal grant writer, she has worked on audits, grant reporting requirements, and all aspects of financial management for nonprofit organizations. She has a B.A. in Accounting and Computer Science from Huntingdon College, where she later was an award-winning accounting instructor, and a Masters of Business Administration from Auburn University in Montgomery. She joined EJI in 2018.

Ayisha Abdur-Rahman

Chief Operations Manager

Ayisha Abdur-Rahman has a B.A. in Secondary Education (English) from Indiana University and a M.A. in Adult and Community Education from Ball State University. She brings a decade of experience in human resources and program management. Before joining EJI in 2019, she was the Program Manager for Revenue Cycle Services at Indiana University Health, where she led on-boarding and training teams to improve new hire on-boarding, training, and leadership development.

Kiara Boone

Deputy Director of Community Education

Kiara Boone earned a degree in Political Science from Davidson College in 2011 and a nonprofit management executive certificate from Georgetown University in 2012. Prior to joining EJI, she worked with the National Coalition for the Homeless in Washington, DC, and managed support for community development in Florida for the Jessie Ball duPont Fund.

Josh Cannon

Senior Project Manager

Josh Cannon earned his Bachelor’s degree in 2010 from the Department of History Honors Program at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, where his honors thesis was published in the Journal of Planning History. Prior to joining EJI in 2015, he taught preschool children and coordinated projects for an industrial automation systems firm in Hoover, Alabama. He was also a contributor to the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute blog, The Struggle Continues.

Emily Wilson

Deputy Director of Development

Emily Wilson joined EJI in 2021 after working with Data Geeks Lab, where she helped nonprofit organizations with development and project management. Before that, she worked in development for six years at Acumen, where she managed fundraising operations and donor outreach, and spent two years at Interaudi Bank developing and managing a customized Salesforce.com platform. She has a B.A. degree in French and Francophone Studies with a special concentration in Sustainable Development from Columbia University.

Ashley Adams

Staff Attorney

Ashley Adams earned a B.A. from Vanderbilt University in 2008 and graduated from the University of Tennessee College of Law in 2011. Prior to joining EJI in 2017, she was Assistant Public Defender and District Court Supervisor for the Tuscaloosa County Office of Public Defender, represented indigent clients as a trial attorney with Jefferson County Public Defender’s Community Law Office in Birmingham, Alabama, and conducted civil litigation as an associate attorney at Gaines Gault Hendrix, P.C., in Birmingham.

Mickey Hubbard

Staff Attorney

Mickey Hubbard graduated from Columbia Law School in 2014, where he interned at the Bronx Defenders and the Southern Center for Human Rights. He has done extensive anti-poverty work, improving school infrastructure in South Africa, increasing food bank access in rural Vermont, and organizing to combat homelessness and provide services to people in financial crisis in North Carolina. He has a B.A. in Political Science from Davidson College.

Rachel Judge

Staff Attorney

Rachel Judge graduated in 2013 from Harvard Law School, where she represented indigent criminal defendants as a student attorney. She interned for the Public Defender Service for the District of Columbia and the Southern Center for Human Rights in Atlanta. She has a B.A. in Sociology from Brown University and worked on behalf of death row inmates in California before law school.

Sofia McDonald

Staff Attorney

Sofia McDonald is a graduate of Harvard College and New York University School of Law, where she was in the Equal Justice and Capital Defender Clinic, worked for the Policing Project, and interned for the NAACP Legal Defense Fund. Before law school, she was a special education teacher in Chicago with Teach for America. She worked on the appeal of a client on death row in Alabama as a litigation associate at Ropes & Gray LLP prior to joining EJI in 2019.

Alison Mollman

Staff Attorney

Alison Mollman graduated in 2012 from University of California, Berkeley, School of Law, where she participated in the death penalty clinic and juvenile hall outreach. She interned for the California Habeas Project and represented clients as a certified law student at the East Bay Community Law Center. Prior to law school, she developed a support group for mothers incarcerated at the Iowa Correctional Institute for Women. She has a B.A. in Women’s Studies from the University of Iowa.

Benjamin Schaefer

Staff Attorney

Benjamin Schaefer graduated in 2011 from New York University School of Law, where he participated in the Equal Justice and Capital Defender Clinic and interned at the Orleans Public Defenders in Louisiana. He has a B.A. in History from the University of Virginia and a master’s degree in Administration, Planning, and Social Policy from Harvard University Graduate School of Education. He previously taught sixth grade social studies in Henderson, North Carolina.

Kayla Vinson

Staff Attorney

Kayla Vinson has a B.A. in Sociology and African American Studies from Yale University. After earning an M.S.Ed from the University of Pennsylvania, she was a public school teacher. She has an M.P.A. from Princeton University and a J.D. from New York University School of Law, where she advocated for Native students’ educational rights in the Racial Justice Clinic and researched school-police relations and minority voter dilution as a term-time intern for the NAACP Legal Defense Fund. She joined EJI in 2019.

Eugene Harris

Senior Operations Manager

Eugene Harris is a Montgomery native who brings more than a decade of operations experience to EJI. After obtaining an associates degree in secondary education from Beville State Community College in 2001, he supervised shipping and receiving for West Elm, provided technical support for AT&T, and worked as an IT specialist for Volkswagen. Prior to joining EJI in 2018, he was an assistant site lead overseeing three external and all internal operations for Kimura, a logistics company in South Carolina.

Victoria Dunn

Senior Site Manager

Victoria Dunn attended Troy University and has over 10 years of experience in management. She worked with T-Mobile as an assistant store manager and was a travel agent for AAA Alabama in Montgomery. Before joining EJI in 2019, she directed marketing, sales, customer service, and human resources as a retail store manager for Spark Wireless in Montgomery.

Andre’ Carlisle

Chief of Site Security

Andre’ Carlisle joined EJI in 2021 after a distinguished career in the military and the Montgomery Police Department. In the U.S. Army, he became an accomplished trainer, winning the Army Commendation Medal for his performance, professionalism, and dedication as Battalion Operations NCOIC in El Paso, Texas. He joined the Montgomery Police Department in 2003, rising to the rank of lieutenant and receiving the 2012 Officer of the Year Award for his outstanding performance.


Tania Cordes

Communications Manager

Tania Cordes has a B.A. in English and an M.F.A. in Creative Writing & Publishing Arts from the University of Baltimore. Prior to joining EJI in 2018, she worked on Strategic Communications at the Open Society Foundations office in Baltimore, where she rose to Communications Coordinator, and was Special Projects Manager for Strategic Communications at the Maryland Institute College of Art, where she led special projects and campaigns and helped organize a multi-year public speaker series on diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Claire Gelbart

Digital Marketing Assistant

Claire Gelbart graduated from Tufts University in 2017 with a B.A. in English. She taught journalism at San Quentin Prison as part of a feeder program for the San Quentin Newspaper, which is written and edited by men who are incarcerated there. Before joining EJI in 2020, she worked as an executive assistant at Solow Literary Enterprises and led brand marketing strategy as a senior associate at Care/of.

Caitlin McCaskey

Project Manager

Caitlin McCaskey has a B.A. in English from Westminister College in New Wilmington, Pennsylvania. She joined EJI in 2019 with more than a decade of experience in managing speakers, starting as a coordinator for Penguin Speakers Bureau in New York. She rose to Senior Manager at HarperCollins Speakers Bureau and headed a department responsible for booking over 200 events a year as Senior Agent Director for Penguin Random House Speakers Bureau. Most recently, she managed Thought Leadership Programs for Consumer Reports.

Miriam Ashley-Smoke

Site Manager

Miriam Ashley-Smoke earned a B.A. in History from Auburn University in Montgomery in 1997. She has extensive experience in addressing client needs as a customer service agent for Bellsouth and a reservation agent for Delta Airlines. Prior to joining EJI in 2018, she managed a team of employees who provided assistance to medical providers and patients at Optum, a division of United Healthcare Group.

Christina Cottrell

Site Manager

Christina Cottrell graduated cum laude with an Associate of Arts degree in Liberal Studies from Amridge University in 2017. As a Loan Operations Specialist at Colonial Bank, she processed payments, analyzed loan payments, and provided customer service for customers across the country. She joined EJI in 2019 after more than 10 years with Optum Rx, where she was responsible for ensuring that local and nationwide pharmacies had correct billing and medical information needed to process pharmacy claims.

Russell Jones

Site Manager

Russell Jones served for seven years in the U.S. Air Force as an air traffic controller and aerospace physiologist. He brings over a dozen years of experience in supervising, training, and sales to EJI. Most recently, he supervised the Inspection Team at Hyundai Motor Manufacturing in Montgomery. Before that, he was a top sales representative for Sharpline, Inc., and served as President of Skyline Advertising, Inc., in Los Angeles. He joined EJI in 2021.

Kevin Harris

Merchandise/Warehouse Manager

Kevin Harris joined EJI in 2021 from the Amazon Fulfillment Center in Bessemer, Alabama. After graduating from high school in Montgomery, he attended Alabama A&M University in Huntsville, where he mentored youth and organized campus service events. He has a decade of recruiting and human resources experience with Montgomery Public Schools, the Armed Forces’s Heidelberg School District in Germany, and West Corporation and AT&T in Texas. He also taught technology in Montgomery for two years.

Antione Bagby

Audio/Visual Site Manager

Antione Bagby joined EJI in 2021 with more than 15 years of experience at Hyundai AutoEver America dealing with digital information monitoring and providing technical support for the entire manufacturing plant. After graduating from Alabama State University with a B.S. in Business Administration with a concentration in Computer Information Systems in 2004, he worked as an IT Specialist for KBM Enterprise in Ardmore, Tennessee, and for the Georgia Department of Community Affairs in Atlanta.

Kaletha McKee

Program Assistant

Kaletha McKee has a B.S. in Business Administration from Troy University in Montgomery. She has more than a decade of experience in customer service, marketing, communications, and human resources. Before joining EJI’s staff in 2018, she worked for the Rosa Parks Museum in Montgomery, Community Bank & Trust and Belk Department Store in Prattville, and Regions Financial Corporation in Birmingham.

Gabrielle Daniels

Project Manager

Gabri​e​lle Daniels has a B.S. in Biology from Iowa State University (2010) and a Master of Public Health from the Yale School of Public Health (2016), where she focused on social determinants of health and research-based program interventions. In 2017, she completed a Masters-Fellowship from Duke Divinity School, concentrating in Theology, Medicine, and Culture. Her research background has sought to address the needs of vulnerable people, from homeless shelter populations in Connecticut to rural communities in Cambodia.

Breana Lamkin

Project Manager

Breana Lamkin earned a B.A. in Political Science from Howard University and a Master of Public Administration and Policy from American University. Before joining EJI in 2018, she worked as a paralegal for attorneys representing clients with disabilities in Montgomery and was an operations assistant for Mosaic Ventures, a venture capital firm in London. She also conducted legal research, factual investigation, document management, and trial preparation as a legal assistant for Carey Danis & Lowe in St. Louis.

Anuja Samuel

Project Manager

Anuja Samuel earned a Master in Business Administration from Harvard Business School in 2021 and has a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering from the University of Alberta. Before joining EJI in 2021, she worked as a production engineer at Suncor Energy, where she worked in operations at the refinery, and interned at McKinsey & Company. She also mentored young women (aged 11-17) interested in STEM careers and taught skating at the Center for Autism.

Elliot Spillers

Project Manager

Elliot Spillers obtained a B.S. in Commerce and Business Management in 2016 from the University of Alabama. As the second person of color in school history to be elected Student Government Association President, he advocated for survivors of sexual assault and established the inaugural position of Vice President for Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion. A YWCA Central Alabama Social Justice AmeriCorps Member in Birmingham, he coordinated social justice programs for high school students, investigating the role of heritage, culture, and racial identity in adolescent development.

Kimmberley Taylor

Project Manager

Kimmberley Taylor was the Marketing Director at Collaborative Connection in Los Angeles before joining EJI. She earned a B.A. in Entertainment Marketing from California State University at San Bernardino in 2013, and spent several years working in marketing, real estate, and event planning in Southern California. A licensed realtor, she managed real estate offices and sold properties for Invitation Homes, Inc., and Help-U-Sell Real Estate in Los Angeles. She joined our staff in 2021.

Trey Walk

Project Manager

Trey Walk has a B.A. in History from Duke University, where he worked with the Community Empowerment Fund to help homeless and low-income residents secure housing, build credit, and apply for jobs. He also worked on affordable housing and homelessness as an intern for the Northside Neighborhood Initiative and the National Low Income Housing Coalition, researched the history of racial inequality in housing policy in Durham, and worked on voting rights as a community organizer in South Carolina, before joining EJI in 2019.

Katie Wu

Project Manager

Katie Wu has a B.A. in American History and Literature from Harvard College, where she created a mock exhibit examining the influence of visual culture on how we remember racial violence. As a curatorial intern at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History, she developed a public engagement program about women and African Americans in the abolitionist movement. Before joining EJI in 2019, she worked on professional development programs for K-12 educators in under-resourced communities at the National Academy of Advanced Teacher Education.

Maria Morrison

Senior Social Worker

Maria Morrison joined EJI in 2008. Ms. Morrison manages a range of clinical and therapeutic services at EJI for incarcerated clients and formerly incarcerated people and their families. Before joining EJI she provided services for several years to adults struggling with mental illness, substance use, and homelessness as well as in a therapeutic wilderness program for adolescents with trauma-related behavioral disorders. She has an M.S.W. from the University of Alabama, an M.F.A. in creative writing from Goddard College, and a B.A. in English from the University of Montana.

Bryan G. Stevenson


Bryan G. Stevenson studied at the University of Pennsylvania, joining church and community endeavors, including Exodus To Excellence, Inc. where he combined his social service and filmmaking skills before becoming a freelance filmmaker in New York City. He has nearly a decade of experience writing, editing, and directing documentaries, narrative films, and commercial projects for global brands that include Nike, the GAP, Puma, and Apple. After interning at EJI in 2005, he joined our staff in 2018.

Chris Macklin


Chris Macklin graduated with a B.A. from Oberlin College and a PhD from the University of York (UK). Before joining EJI in 2018 he was on the Music and Medieval Studies faculties of Mercer University and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, publishing research on aspects of the use of music and community in times of social stress and teaching a variety of undergraduate and postgraduate courses. He also worked on an Alabama capital postconviction case as a legal assistant and researcher.

Reneé Cleveland

Development Manager

Reneé Cleveland earned a Bachelor’s degree in Justice and Public Safety from Auburn University at Montgomery in 2008. She planned curriculum and instructed students at Martin Luther King Elementary School in Montgomery. A certified paralegal, she worked as a legal secretary at Donohoe & Stapleton prior to joining EJI.

Lendria Glass

Development Manager

Lendria Glass earned a B.A. in Communication from Auburn University and a M.S. in Strategic Communication from Troy University. A skilled communicator and relationship builder, she has nearly 15 years of experience in communication, sales, fundraising, and development. Having worked in the public and private sectors prior to joining EJI in 2019, she most recently served as Development Director for the Arthritis Foundation in Montgomery.

Christine Williams

Development Manager

Christine Williams graduated from Faulkner University with a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in 2009. Prior to joining EJI in 2020, she managed a complex grants portfolio as a state program director for the Corporation for National and Community Service in Ridgeland, Mississippi. She served as a combat medic in the U.S. Army Reserves and has more than two decades of experience working with state and federal service programs, including Senior Corps and AmeriCorps with the Alabama Governor’s Office of Faith-Based and Volunteer Service.

Alexis Smith

Project Assistant

Alexis Smith has a B.A. in Social Anthropology and Global Health and Health Policy from Harvard University and a Master of Public Health from Columbia University, where she focused on the sociomedical sciences and evidence-based interventions. She coordinated a community needs assessment while at the New York Academy of Medicine, oversaw development for Empowerment Through Integration, and provided health education as a Diabetes Prevention and Education Coach for the Institute for Family Health in New York before joining EJI in 2020.

James Warren

Executive Assistant

James Warren joined EJI in 2014. He previously was executive assistant to Dr. Anthony Campolo at Eastern University and served as director of the event coordination department for the International Mission Board in Richmond, Virginia. He has a Master’s degree in Religious Education from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary and a Bachelor’s degree in Church Music from Oklahoma Baptist University.

Lori Taylor

Executive Assistant

Lori Taylor joined EJI in 2015. Prior to joining EJI, she founded, directed, and managed the Bellevue Farmers Market, a nonprofit in Bellevue, Washington, where she advocated for economic justice for farmers. She has previously worked with faith communities and facilitated discussions on a range of social justice issues. She has a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Musical Theatre from Stephens College in Columbia, Missouri.

Mamie Gaines

Staff Assistant

Mamie Gaines is an Air Force veteran who retired after more than two decades of distinguished military service. She worked as a Certified Staffing Specialist for Elwood Staffing in Oxford, Alabama, before joining Smithsonian Institution as Executive Assistant to the Senior Vice President of Smithsonian Enterprises in Washington, D.C. While there, she simultaneously worked as the Smithsonian Theaters Contract Administrator. She spent 10 years at the Smithsonian and then managed the Sleep Inn & Suites in Montgomery before joining EJI in 2020.

Ramona Thornton

Staff Assistant

Ramona Thornton graduated from Huntingdon College in 1991, with a B.A. in Art. She brings a wealth of administrative and operations assistance experience to EJI.

Sherry Hill

Staff Assistant

Sherry Hill joined EJI’s staff in 2016. She earned an Associate Degree in Professional Transcription in 2004. She previously worked for over 15 years at Prince Institute, a private college in Montgomery, Alabama, where she served as administrative assistant, enrollment specialist, and ultimately, office manager.

Mary Vandiver

Staff Assistant

Mary Vandiver earned a B.F.A. in Art/Fashion Design Concentration from Howard University, where she worked as the NextGen Coordinator for DC Fashion Week and worked to promote art and fashion as a tool for social expression. She worked with the Ralph J. Bunche International Affairs department at Howard to support international study abroad programs and helped to increase minority participation in retail as a member of the Black Retail Action Group. She came to EJI in 2018.

Mary Woods

Staff Assistant

Mary Woods joined EJI’s staff in 2016. A lifelong resident of Montgomery, she has years of experience in customer service, including five years for the City of Montgomery’s Department of Public Safety, where she managed requests for information and communications with clients and the public.

Ashanta Young

Staff Assistant

Ashanta Young is a native of Elmore County, Alabama, and earned an Associate degree in Business from Troy University. Prior to joining EJI in 2021, she gained more than a decade of experience managing office operations in the healthcare field. She served as Patient Relations Coordinator for American Family Care in Prattville, Office Manager for Southern Orthopaedic Surgeons in Montgomery, and most recently, Assistant Manager at Baptist Health.

Kristen Elijah


Kristen Elijah obtained a B.A. in History from Auburn University in 2006 and a J.D. from Thomas Goode Jones School of Law in 2009. She organized and advocated for workers as an external organizer for the Service Employees International Union and worked as an attorney for Parnell & Crum, P.A. Prior to joining EJI in 2018, she handled payroll, accounts payable, invoicing, and other accounting and management responsibilities for Central Alabama Fluid Power and Carr, Riggs & Ingram, LLC.

Paige Lindsey


Paige Lindsey earned a B.S.B.A. in Finance and Economics from Auburn University, Montgomery, Alabama, and has more than a decade of experience as a bookkeeper and computer software trainer. Prior to joining EJI in 2015, she served as chief operating officer for Admiral Movers, Inc., in Montgomery.

Greg Freeman

IT Administrator

Greg Freeman graduated from Auburn University Montgomery with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration in 2013. Prior to joining EJI in 2021, he managed information technology needs and assets for three properties in Central Alabama as Area IT Tech for PCH Hotels & Resorts. He also worked as an Imaging Specialist for Regions Bank, Electronics/Connection Center Sales Associate for Walmart, and Help Desk Tier 1 for Austal USA in Mobile.

Ariel Harris

Staff Assistant

Ariel Harris has years of experience working with agencies and companies in Montgomery. She worked as an executive assistant at Montgomery Media Group and a customer service representative for the Department of Public Safety, Duke Energy, and Hewlett-Packard. Prior to joining EJI in 2019, she built corporate account relationships, managed a car fleet, hired and trained staff, and developed a branch operational plan as a branch manager for Avis and Budget.

Kayla Whatley

Staff Assistant

Kayla Whatley has a B.S. in Biology from Alabama State University, where she published statewide lesson plans in math science, counseled youth in the Summer Kids/Youth College Adventure Program, and supervised a sizeable budget as chapter president of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority. Before joining EJI in 2020, she worked with youth as a residential specialist at the Lee County Youth Development Center in Opelika, Alabama, and taught physics and chemistry as an eighth grade physical science teacher in Tuscaloosa.

Amber Turner

Contact Center

Amber Turner has a B.A. in Communications from Alabama State University and an M.S. in Strategic Communications from Troy University. She edited, developed, and produced on-air segments as an intern at WVAS Radio and managed sets, cues, sound testing, and camera operation for live segments at Trinity Broadcast Network in Montgomery before joining EJI as a guest service representative in 2019.

Tisha Williams


Tisha Williams has more than a decade of experience in the manufacturing and sanitation industries. Prior to joining EJI, she worked at Baptist Medical Center East and ABM in Montgomery, Alabama. A native of Montgomery, she joined the staff of EJI in 2018.

Greg Dixon

Front Desk Security Officer

Greg Dixon is a war veteran with over 22 years experience in law enforcement. He attended Auburn University at Montgomery before becoming a sergeant in the United States Marine Corps. Following his distinguished military career, he became a police officer for the City of Montgomery and was honored with multiple awards. He retired from the police department in 2019 prior to joining EJI.

Greg Parker

Facilities Manager

Greg Parker is a licensed home builder and master carpenter with over two decades of experience in residential and commercial construction. Prior to joining EJI in 2017, he was responsible for the maintenance and operation of 32 dorm buildings housing 4500 students as Maintenance Supervisor of Student Housing at Auburn University, where he also took Master’s courses in Building Science and Public Administration. He has a B.S. in Human Resource Management from Faulkner University.

Bruce Tolerson

Facilities Maintenance Technician

Bruce Tolerson has over 30 years of experience maintaining facilities that total over a million square feet. He attended Auburn University at Montgomery and Troy University, and starting in 1986, he was responsible for maintaining generators, dock levelers, electrical systems, overhead doors, refrigeration, fire systems, HVAC, conveyor systems, fuel bays, and computer components at the C&S Warehouse, Bi Low Warehouse, and Winn Dixie Warehouse in Montgomery. He joined EJI in 2018.

Bryan Cleare

Staff Assistant

Bryan Cleare has a Bachelors of Science degree in Computer Science from Troy University, where he worked as an administrative assistant and information technology clerk. He brings to EJI valuable experience working in the Rosa Parks Museum and Library at Troy University and in owning and operating his own small business. He joined the staff of EJI in 2018.

Matt Murray

Data Entry Specialist

Matt Murray obtained a Master’s degree in Information Systems Management from Auburn University at Montgomery in 2016 and a Bachelor’s in Communication Studies and Classical Guitar Performance from Huntingdon College in 2014. Prior to joining EJI in 2017, he worked on the installation and upkeep of IT components for WSFA News in Montgomery and helped build a television station from the ground up at a local school.

Cathleen Price

Cooperating Senior Attorney

Cathleen Price is a 1996 graduate of Harvard Law School and a former law clerk of Justice Fred Banks on the Mississippi Supreme Court. She is a 1999 National Association for Public Interest Law (NAPIL) Equal Justice Fellow and has coordinated complex litigation at EJI for several years.

Eric Brown

Law Fellow

Eric Brown served as an EJI Justice Fellow before attending New York University School of Law, where he graduated in 2021. He assisted in trials as a legal intern for the public defender in Lafayette, Louisiana, represented parents seeking to have their children returned from foster care in Brooklyn Family Court, handled a misdemeanor caseload as a certified legal intern in the Colorado Office of the Public Defender, and represented children accused of felony offenses in Bronx Family Court delinquency proceedings.

Laurel Hattix

Law Fellow

Laurel Hattix interned at EJI while she was a law student at the University of Chicago Law School, where she participated in the Civil Rights and Police Accountability Clinic and served as Editor-in-Chief of the Chicago Journal of International Law. After graduating law school in 2019, she worked as an associate at Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton in Washington, D.C., and clerked for the Honorable Terrence G. Berg, U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan.

Sophia Henager

Law Fellow

Sophia Henager has a B.A. in political science and international relations from Gonzaga University and is a 2020 graduate of New York University School of Law, where she participated in the Equal Justice and Capital Defender Clinic. As an intern, she worked on felony and misdemeanor cases at the public defender’s office in Seattle and drafted appellate briefs for the Legal Aid Society in New York. Prior to law school, she served as an AmeriCorps paralegal for the Legal Aid Society of Hawaii.

Daniel Loehr

Daniel Loehr is a graduate of Middlebury College and New York University School of Law. During law school, he participated in the Equal Justice and Defender Clinic and interned for the Department of Justice Civil Rights Division and the San Francisco Public Defender’s Office. Since graduating in 2018, he has served as an EJI law fellow and clerked for the Hon. Tanya Chutkan, U.S. District Court, D.C., and the Hon. M. Margaret McKeown, U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit.

Evan Reid

Law Fellow

Evan Reid has a B.A. in English from Morehouse College and a J.D. from the University of California—Davis School of Law. He interned at EJI, volunteered for the Colorado Immigration Rights Coalition, conducted restorative justice practices for children through the UC Davis Restorative Justice Practicum, and drafted appellate briefs as a law clerk for the Law Office of Charles Bonneau Jr. and for the Federal Public Defender in Sacramento. He joined EJI in 2020.

Cyan Blackwell

Justice Fellow

Cyan Blackwell earned a B.A. in Public Management, Leadership, and Policy and Sociology from The Ohio State University in 2020. She served as a peer mentor in a juvenile correctional facility, worked on prosecutor reform as an intern at the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, researched criminal sentencing and policing practices as an intern at the Ohio Criminal Sentencing Commission, and worked with clients and their families as an intern at the Cuyahoga County Juvenile Public Defender’s Office before joining EJI.

Michaela Clarke

Justice Fellow

Michaela Clarke has a B.A. in African and Black Diaspora Studies and Peace, Justice, and Conflict Studies from DePaul University, where she facilitated restorative justice workshops and participated in the Inside Out Prison Exchange program with men incarcerated at Stateville Prison. Active in community service and programming for multicultural student groups at DePaul, she worked as a youth counselor at the Gary Comer Youth Center before joining EJI in 2020.

Rory Farquharson

Justice Fellow

Rory Farquharson earned an A.B. in Social Studies in 2020 from Harvard, where he wrote a senior thesis on the history of photographs depicting racial violence in the U.S. He worked with the Northern Ireland Center for Democracy and Peace Building to provide outreach in communities affected by violence and helped raise awareness for voting rights organizations and worked on the production of Pod Save America and Pod Save the World as an intern for Crooked Media.

Solomon Ghebreyesus

Justice Fellow

Solomon Ghebreyesus graduated in 2020 with a B.A. in History and African American Studies from Yale University, where he served as Vice President of the Black Men’s Student Union and mentored middle school boys through the Edward E. Bouchet Mentoring Program. Prior to joining EJI, he researched the Tulsa race massacre and he worked on juvenile justice issues and engaged in community outreach work in internships with the Vera Institute of Justice, Brownsville Community Justice Center, and the Neighborhood Defender Service of Harlem.

Danielle Harris

Justice Fellow

Danielle Harris earned a B.A. in History in 2021 from Yale University, where she did research and advocacy to assist incarcerated people obtain release during the Covid-19 pandemic and conducted original research on colorism and the first Black students and servants at Yale. She researched and wrote briefs for asylum seekers and refugees as an intern at the Scalabrini Centre of Cape Town, South Africa, and served as a tutor for the Yale Undergraduate Prison Project.

Sumita Rajpurohit

Justice Fellow

Sumita Rajpurohit has a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering and French from Johns Hopkins University, where she helped formerly incarcerated adults prepare for undergraduate studies, taught after-school science lessons for Baltimore Public School students, and founded the Women of Mechanical Engineering Network. Before joining EJI in 2019, she managed a design project for the Space Telescope Science Institute, designed a new model for studying traumatic brain injury, and co-authored two published research articles.

Keiana West

Justice Fellow

Keiana West earned a B.A. in Psychology from Williams College, where she conducted research on the school-to-prison pipeline, co-developed a curriculum for a juvenile court alternative sentencing program, and co-directed the Justice League Summer Program, a social justice leadership and mentoring program for middle school students. She evaluated a diversion program for people charged with low-level offenses in South Africa, where as a Princeton in Africa Fellow, she worked as a Monitoring & Evaluation Fellow prior to joining EJI in 2020.

Paris Wilkerson

Justice Fellow

Paris Wilkerson is a 2020 graduate of Columbia University, where she earned a B.A. in Economics-Political Science. She served as lead coordinator for Mentoring Youth New York City, promoted student involvement with social justice issues for the Eric H. Holder Jr. Initiative for Civil and Political Rights, and won a Guggenheim Fellowship to work with pro se litigants at the New York Legal Assistance Group and engage in social justice programming.

Mary Haley Thompson

Project Manager

Mary Haley Thompson came to EJI in 2021 from South Carolina, where she led economic development efforts for the City of Anderson. She brings years of experience in writing and managing grants to fund community and economic development projects, assisting local businesses with funding, site selection, and entrepreneurship programs, helping to build affordable housing, parks, and playgrounds in underserved neighborhoods, and organizing city events from food festivals to Shakespeare in the Park. She has a B.S. in Biological Sciences from Presbyterian College.

Tim Lewis

Innovation Officer

Tim Lewis is an accomplished “connector” known for not only recognize potential opportunities but also successfully connecting all the necessary resources – human, technical and financial. As President and Founder of TALA Professional Services, he delivers profitable technologies to businesses and industries globally as well as leading Connected Community Programs currently improving economic opportunities for cities and their residents across the United States. He has an Engineering B.S. from the University of Alabama.

Catherine Coleman-Flowers

Rural Development Manager

Catherine Coleman-Flowers is a native of Lowndes County, Alabama. She taught high school in Detroit, Michigan, and Washington, D.C. before returning home to advocate for poor people in Alabama’s Black Belt. She is the founder and director of the Alabama Center for Rural Enterprise and joined EJI in summer 2008 as part of EJI’s Race and Poverty initiative.
