Second Homicide in Three Days at Alabama Prison

Another incarcerated person has been killed at Donaldson Correctional Facility near Birmingham, Alabama.

The Jefferson County Coroner confirmed today that Joseph Agee, 29, was stabbed to death at the prison on Monday evening.

Mr. Agee is the second person killed at Donaldson in less than 72 hours. Denarieya Smith, 30, was stabbed to death early Saturday morning.

Two other men also died at Donaldson in the past week. Austin Knowles died Thursday only days after his 25th birthday. No cause of death has been reported.

On Friday, Timmy Wilson was found unresponsive in his cell and pronounced dead soon afterwards.

At least 15 incarcerated people have been killed in Alabama’s prisons so far this year. Seven were killed at Donaldson—Joseph Agree, Denarieya Smith, David Sloan on July 17, Mitchell Cosby on June 15, William Jennings on March 2, Victor Russo on February 24, and Barry Gardner on February 22.

The Alabama Department of Corrections has not announced any effort, changes, or new policies to respond to the outbreak of homicides in the state’s prisons this year.
