Results of a new poll by Quinnipiac University released on June 1 show that American voters are leaning against the death penalty: 48 percent say a person convicted of murder should be sentenced to life imprisonment without parole, while only 43 percent favor the death penalty.
Since Quinnipiac last asked the question in 2013, support for life without parole has risen by five percentage points and support for the death penalty dropped by five points.
This latest poll is consistent with recent surveys recording a significant trend against capital punishment in America.
