Litigation Role at EJI
EJI is seeking an attorney with litigation experience to join its full-time legal staff for a role that focuses on capital postconviction work.
About EJI
The Equal Justice Initiative is a nonprofit law office and human rights organization that provides legal assistance to people sentenced to death, children in the criminal justice system, people wrongly convicted or sentenced, and incarcerated people suffering inhumane conditions of confinement.
About the Position
We currently are challenging excessive and abusive punishments imposed on people across the United States, maintain a large docket of death penalty cases, wrongful conviction cases, and civil rights cases, and have undertaken large reform projects relating to racial injustice and inequality. We have filed civil actions in the last few years challenging the horrific and inhumane conditions in Alabama’s maximum security prisons, the abuse of power by correctional officers, and widespread mistreatment of mentally ill inmates. We work with and provide training to lawyers, law students, community leaders, and low-income communities to improve access to justice. We have launched an extensive initiative on racial justice that seeks to illuminate this country’s history of racial injustice and provide meaningful solutions to these entrenched problems and have created the Legacy Sites, which have attracted international acclaim.
EJI is seeking lawyers with an interest in strategic and complex litigation, who have at least five years of litigation experience, are highly motivated, hard-working, and who embrace our mission, client-centered approach, and institutional goals. This role will primarily involve postconviction work for clients who have been sentenced to death in Alabama. Strong research and writing skills, excellent interpersonal and communication skills, and an abiding commitment to social justice are essential to the position.
EJI provides full benefits; pay will be commensurate with experience.
