The African American Film Critics Association today announced its 2019 Top Ten Films and this year’s winners of the AAFCA Awards.
The world’s largest group of Black film critics ranked Just Mercy in its top three films of the year.
Jamie Foxx was named Best Supporting Actor for his powerful portrayal of Mr. McMillian. The AAFCA Awards will be presented on January 22, 2020.
Critics have hailed Mr. Foxx’s performance in Just Mercy, writing that he “runs the gamut of human emotion as McMillian. Beaten by life but not entirely broken, imperfect but innocent, Foxx is compassionate, wry, and thoughtful in one of the best performances of his career.” The Hollywood Reporter observed that Mr. Foxx’s performance was “transfixing enough to make you hold your breath without realizing it.”
Based on the bestselling memoir by EJI director Bryan Stevenson, Just Mercy presents the unforgettable story of Bryan Stevenson (Michael B. Jordan) and the case of Walter McMillian (Academy Award winner Jamie Foxx), who was convicted and sentenced to death for a crime he did not commit.
Just Mercy has won several awards at film festivals and is slated to receive the National Board of Review Freedom of Expression Award in January. In addition to Mr. Foxx, outstanding performances by Michael B. Jordan, Brie Larson, Rob Morgan, Karan Kendrick, Tim Blake Nelson, and O’Shea Jackson Jr. have been widely acclaimed.
