Death Sentencing Rate in Alabama Increases

In 2005, Alabama sentenced more people to death than the neighboring states of Georgia, Mississippi, Louisiana, and Tennessee combined. Alabama ranked fourth in the country – behind the three most populous states – for the number of people it sentenced to death.

At a time when the number of death sentences nationwide is steadily declining, in 2006 the number of people sentenced to death in Alabama increased 16.6%.
