EJI won the release of Diane Tucker, an intellectually disabled woman who was wrongly convicted and sent to prison for a murder that never took place.
Ms. Tucker and her sister, Victoria Banks, were convicted of killing a baby allegedly born to Ms. Banks. Ms. Banks denied ever having the baby, and medical evidence confirmed that Ms. Banks never had a child.
These women and a man charged with the offense were innocent and sent to jail because they were intellectually disabled and unable to protect themselves.
EJI continues to provide assistance to people with mental illness and disabilities, who are extremely vulnerable in the American criminal justice system.
